7 great reasons to integrate your SCOM and OMS data

One of the cool features available in our Enterprise Application Monitoring (EAM) edition is the ability to seamlessly pull data from the Log Analytics service in Microsoft OMS straight into your SquaredUp dashboards and drilldowns.

Why is this so cool? Well, here's SEVEN awesome benefits from integrating SCOM and OMS data via a single pane of glass in SquaredUp.

1. Bring structure to your data

The power of OMS is that it allows you to collect a lot of data and then query that massive data set very quickly. One of the reasons for this is because it’s unstructured data. Unfortunately, that can leave you with a vast sea of data that’s difficult find to your way around or draw meaningful insights from. Whilst you can query OMS to find a log file error on all your servers, it’s not so easy to do that for, say, just the errors on the SQL servers that are part of your CRM application, because OMS doesn’t know what those servers are. But SCOM does, and SquaredUp can utilise that structure to allow you to automatically query OMS for just the application, or group, or even a single server, that you’re viewing. This means you can automatically extract the value-add insights OMS provides in the exact context of item you’re interested in, whether that’s an application, server or even a specific alert.

2. No expertise required

Let's make no bones about it, OMS is powerful, but there’s a clear barrier to entry in terms of the skills and knowledge needed to extract the insights you want from the data you’ve collected, including learning OMS’s own distinct query language. By presenting your users with OMS data via SquaredUp, all that work is done for them, surfacing the insights they need, without them having to know how to individually query OMS.

3. Your users don't even need to be OMS users

Because SquaredUp uses a single reader-role to pull data down from OMS, you won’t have to set up your users in OMS, or train them on how to use a new portal, in order to provide them with access to the data they need.

4. Role-Based Access Control

Because SquaredUp adheres to SCOM Role Based Access Control (RBAC), we can automatically leverage this when querying OMS, meaning that your users will only have access to OMS data for those servers / applications that you’ve granted them access to in SCOM.

5. OMS for everyone

For data where you don’t need to apply SCOM RBAC, you can use our Open Access dashboards and, by integrating OMS data into these, you can provide those insights to literally as many users as you want.

6. A single portal

Rather than setting up and training your users in a new portal and then them having to access two different portals (SCOM & OMS) on a daily basis, SquaredUp allows you to provide them with a single, fast, intuitive portal for your IT operations and monitoring data. By using our SQL and WebAPI Tiles to pull in data from sources like ServiceNow, Service Manager, Splunk, Cisco Prime, PRTG and many more, you can take this to the next level and provide your users with a true single-pane-of-glass user interface.

7. Saving the best for last...rapid route cause analysis

OMS collects some cool data and can tell you some really, really useful things, like the most recent software patches on a server, or who’s been logged onto that server via RDP. But it’s far from easy to immediately make sense of that data, or correlate it to what SCOM’s telling you. However, by pulling that data into your SquaredUp dashboards, if you're responding to an alert or troubleshooting an application performance issue, you can instantly get those great insights from OMS in the exact context of the issue you’re facing. And because new issues are typically the result of a change, rather than of the failure of a simple infrastructure component, marrying your OMS data with your SCOM data in this way allows you to get straight to the root cause and massively reduce your meantime-to-resolution. Perhaps something like, "Better Together", is the phrase we're looking for :-)
