Extending SCOM monitoring using SQL queries

Join Matthew Long as we take a look at using a free community MP from Zvi Uretzky to monitor application health via custom SQL queries, directly from the SCOM console without any MP authoring required.

Zvi's management pack (much like the PowerShell Monitoring MP, see below) doesn't add extra monitoring to SCOM directly, rather it adds templates to the Authoring tab of the SCOM console so you can easily take any SQL query and use it as the basis for SCOM monitoring.

Performance collection of the result is also enabled, so now you can monitor the behaviour of your application (such as the number of active users in an e-commerce website) and alert if that number dips below a threshold (indicating perhaps there is an issue if no users are logged in during peak hours), and store the results in the SCOM DW for graphing and analysis.

This MP makes it very easy to create outside-in or smoke test monitoring using scripts you probably already have in your organisation.

Download the accompanying slides.

If you like the MP and want to give feedback to Zvi (or run into issues and need some assistance) head over to his Github (link below) and let him know.
